What are omega 3-fatty acids? They are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s) that can be found in various foods.
What are the health benefits? There have been a variety of claims about the benefits of omega 3-fatty acids from heart health, eye health and reducing inflammation to reducing risk of certain cancers, however, most of this is not conclusive and is based on observational data.
How much is recommended per day? For adults 19+ years the recommendation for men is 1.6 grams (1600 milligrams) per day and for women 1.1 grams (1100 milligrams/day)
What the best sources of omega 3-fatty acids?
The top sources of omega 3’s which are the most easily utilized by the body are in seafood, so striving to eat 3 or more servings of fish per week would help you to easily meet that requirement.
Other sources of omega 3’s which can be converted to a usable form include foods like chia seeds, flax seeds, English walnuts and canola oil.
