Brass Quintet hits WCU stage
The Western Carolina University School of Music will present a concert by the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the recital hall of the Coulter Building in Cullowhee.
The quintet-in-residence at WCU, the group features P. Bradley Ulrich and David Ginn, trumpets; Travis Bennett, horn; Dan Cherry, trombone; and Michael Schallock, tuba. Western Carolina has embraced a campuswide interdisciplinary learning theme for the 2013-14 academic year of “1960s: Take It All In,” with a yearlong series of arts, events, research, reflection and discussion connected to the theme.
For its fall 2013 program, the SMBQ will feature two monumental works for brass quintet that were written during the 1960s — quintets by Malcolm Arnold (1961) and Arthur Frackenpohl (1966). In addition, they will perform works by J.S. Bach, Rathburn and W.C. Handy, and a new arrangement by the group’s horn player, Bennett, of “Fugata” by Astor Piazzolla.
