Canton’s Colonial Theatre receives international praise
The historic Colonial Theatre in downtown Canton has been nominated for a Momentum Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association for best musical venue of the year.
The award celebrates rising artists and key contributors to the bluegrass business. Built in 1932, the theatre has seen an uptick in use over the years and Canton is working to promote it to the entire region and beyond. It was renovated in 2006 after sustaining flood damage and serves as a multi-use facility with state of the art film, video, and sound equipment. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The theatre is competing against four other venues including the ISIS Musical Hall in Asheville, Redwing Roots in Mount Solon, Va. and the Bluegrass Situation program at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.
