Local runners take top spots in half marathon

Runners from up and down the East Coast converged on Waynesville this month to try their stride at the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon, but local runners came out on top once all 110 runners crossed the finish line May 14.

• First place: Jared Berry of Powell, Tennessee

• Second place: Sarah Beth Lee of Waynesville

• Third place: Kevin FitzGerald of Waynesville

FitzGerald’s third-place finish was particularly notable. The runner came in first place last year but has been busy since July recovering from a bicycle accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury, hundreds of stitches and staples, and many broken bones.
