Live animal programs offered for schools

Schools and other educational organizations in Western North Carolina have the opportunity to bring wildlife education programs to their home turf through the Mountain Wildlife Outreach program.

These professional-quality presentations offer a variety of live animals and are narrated by experienced wildlife advocates. These include the wolves of Rob Gudger, the raptors of the Balsam Mountain Trust Nature Center, the reptiles and amphibians of Steve O’Neil, the birds, mammals and reptiles of naturalist Carlton Burke and exotic animals from the North Georgia Zoo and “Wings to Soar,” a popular summer attraction at Rock City.  All presentations are designed to  engage the audience in a special way regarding our valued “wild lives” and “wild places”.

This outreach is offered by friends of Mountain Wildlife Days, a two-day event held in July at the Sapphire Valley Resort.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.

The Smoky Mountain News is a wholly private corporation. Reader contributions support the journalistic mission of SMN to remain independent. Your support of SMN does not constitute a charitable donation. If you have a question about contributing to SMN, please contact us.
