Slopes open at Cataloochee

Slopes open at Cataloochee

Cataloochee Ski Area opened for the first time this season on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Two slopes were open for business from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, with the ski area closing up at the end of the day in anticipation of prolonged rain Monday and Tuesday. The plan is to resume snowmaking and open up again before the coming weekend.

The Nov. 11 opening is one of the earlier opening days Cataloochee has had in recent years. The first day of skiing was Nov. 20 in 2017 and Nov. 21 in 2016, both of which were considered to be remarkably late opening days — typically opening day falls in the first half of November. The season saw a Nov. 15 launch in 2015 and in 2014 opened on Nov. 2, the third-earliest opening day in Cataloochee’s history.
