Untreated sewage discharged in Clyde
The Junaluska Sanitary District experienced a discharge of untreated sewage from a blockage in a manhole due to mop heads, rags and towels.
The manhole is located North of Paragon Parkway and South of Recycle Road along the railroad at approximately MP T-23.09. The sewage incident totaled approximately 4,500 gallons. The sewage released at the branch from the Haywood Regional Medical Center feeding Jones Cove branch. Jones Cove branch feeds Richland Creek which feeds the Pigeon River.
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Water Quality was notified of the event and is reviewing the matter. General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
