Haywood reports 6 more deaths at Silver Bluff
Haywood County Health and Human Services are reporting six more deaths as confirmed by death certificates received within the past week. The individuals all died at Silver Bluff Village.
With the six additional deaths, that's a total of 30 Silver Bluff residents who've died since an outbreak hit the Canton nursing home a few weeks ago. Five of the deaths list COVID-19 as the secondary cause of death (the disease that initiated the events resulting in death.) One lists COVID-19 as the primary cause. The individuals were all over the age of 80 and all had underlying medical conditions. To protect the families’ privacy, no further information about these patients will be released.
Dr. Mark Jaben, medical director for Haywood County Public Health, said the outbreak led to 150 Silver Bluff staff and residences being infected with the virus.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones. This is a sad reminder that COVID-19 is a serious and sometimes deadly illness. We urge all citizens to do their part by observing social distancing, wear masks, and practicing good hygiene,” said Health Director Patrick Johnson.
