Summer camp canceled at Waynesville Rec
For the second year in a row, the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department will cancel its popular summer camp series due to COVID-19.
“We’re very disappointed that we will not be able to offer the camp,” said Colt Miller, Program Supervisor for the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department. “We understand that parents need to make a decision for their child for the summer.”
Two issues contributed to the decision. First of all, Gov. Roy Cooper has not released summer camp guidelines, as his office is still waiting for the Centers for Disease Control to release the federal version. Secondly, at this point the department foresees an issue with hiring the number of counselors it would need to pull the camp off.
Usually, recruitment and training begins in late winter, with camper signups occurring in March. This year, the department decided to delay those activities — and its final decision — in order to allow more time for new information to come in.
Should restrictions lift later this spring, the department hopes to plan day trips for youth and seniors.
