Question:  I’ve been reading about JACKFRUIT and notice that there are many products with jackfruit at Ingles that look like meat – is this a good alternative to eating meat?

Answer:  Jackfruit is definitely a fruit, in that nutritionally it has much more in common with fruit than a meat or beans. Jackfruit is an excellent source of carbohydrates, a good source of fiber and an excellent source of potassium.

Here is the nutritional breakdown of a cup of raw jackfruit:

According to the Department of Agriculture , a cup of raw, sliced jackfruit contains:

157 calories, 3 g of protein, 1 g fat, 38 g carbohydrates(31 g sugar),
2.5 g fiber, 739 mg potassium, 48 mg magnesium.

Related Items

Jackfruit can be eaten raw or can be cooked.  You might see it in recipes where it resembles or is seasoned to look like pulled pork, but it is not a nutritional substitute or alternative for eating meat, beans or tofu (soy) because it does not have the amount of protein those ingredients would have.

3.5 oz of cooked pork = 26 grams of protein

1 c of cooked black beans = 15 grams of protein

3.5 oz tofu = 17 grams of protein
