Family, friends of Popcorn Sutton tell the ‘real’ story Aug. 3-4

art popcorn realstoryFriends and family of Popcorn Sutton are holding a reunion from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Aug. 3-4 at the Stompin’ Ground in Maggie Valley.

Organizers say those who want to hear the “real” story of Popcorn Sutton should attend the event. Special guests include singer Jody Medford and other musicians. Also, Tim Smith from the Discovery Channel’s Moonshiner series will attend.

Sutton gained notoriety during the years as a moonshiner and in 1999 published a book called Me and My Likker, an autobiography and guide to moonshine production. He was also featured in a History Channel production and was the subject of a documentary by Neal Hutcheson. Sutton committed suicide in 2009, on the eve of having to serve a prison sentence for moonshining.
