Stroll the Sylva art scene Aug. 10
Jackson County Visual Arts Association (JVCAA) is sponsoring the Sylva Art Stroll in historic downtown Sylva starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10.
Many merchants will stay open after 5 p.m. to welcome visitors, shoppers, and diners before a 7 p.m. Talent Show at First United Methodist Church of Sylva. JCVAA will host Sylva Art Strolls on the second Fridays of the month.
Galleries participating include:
• Gallery 1 at 604 Main Street will hold a reception for JCVAA’s summer show “Some Like It Hot,” featuring photography, paintings and other visual art, including Gabe McNair’s wood sculptures. Refreshments will be served at this venue and a free “make-and-take art project” will be offered. Gallery 1 will be open until 9 p.m.
• It’s By Nature will host Cullowhee painter Susan Lingg, who will demonstrate a study in watercolor of pathways collaged with handmade paper. Tara Melton Miller of Sylva will demonstrate the ancient art of Kumihimo braiding on a Miru dai loom using up to 16 bobbins. Artists will be available from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and wine and cheese will be served. The gallery will be open until 8 p.m.
• City Lights Cafe on Spring Street will feature an art exhibit by Corina Pia and music by folk singers from Bryson City, Liz and AJ Nance.
• Signature Brew Coffee House will exhibit several original artworks, including photography and collage by the late Ray Menze.
• First United Methodist Church of Sylva, located uphill on the stroll on Jackson Street, will present a Talent Show at 7 p.m. Open to the public, the event is a fundraiser for the children’s ministry with a $10 entry fee for each performance and a $5 admission fee.
In addition to Main Street shops, businesses along the stroll include Nichols House Antiques and Collectibles on Landis Street, City Lights Bookstore on Jackson Street and Papou’s Wine Shop on Main Street heading away from downtown. Eateries located downtown include Lulu’s on Main Restaurant, Main Street Bakery, Mill and Main Restaurant, Hooper’s Restaurant, Pixie’s Emporium & Bistro, City Lights Cafe, and Guadalupe Cafe.
