Metal artist featured in lecture
Noted artist Grace Cathey will share the story about her chosen craft genre – metal sculpture – with her presentation “The Art of Placing Sculpture in Your Garden and Home” at 7 p.m. Aug. 24.
Cathey requests attendees to bring photographs of a location in their own yards that they would like to enhance with metal sculpture(s). Cathey will consider the location and explore ideas about how to choose the correct type of sculpture, and appropriate and imaginative ways to create a new look and personalize space.
In Haywood County, Cathey’s name is recognized because of her unique pieces that have dotted the landscape throughout Waynesville. Her bears are situated in front of the Waynesville Town Hall, and her fox fronts the Norris Professional Building.
At the state level, Cathey’s pieces have appeared in gallery showings at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Arboretum. Cathey’s artistic pieces have also been featured in an exhibit at the United States Botanic Garden and on the White House Christmas tree.
The discussion is free and open to the public. The Shelton House is located at 49 Shelton St. in Waynesville.
