Acclaimed Western North Carolina author Thomas Rain Crowe will present his new book, “New Natives: Becoming Indigenous in a Time of Crisis and Transition,” with photographer Simone Lipscomb at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva.

To the Editor:

Does Jackson County want to be a place where some citizens publicly harass and intimidate elected officials with whom they disagree? How long before harassment becomes vandalism and even assaults? Too often, far-left individuals who, when they do not win at the ballot box or in the arena of ideas, resort to these types of behavior and worse. 

Friday, as Roxan Wetzel and her husband, Rook, eagerly anticipated their trip to Washington, D.C. to see Donald Trump become the United States’ 47th president, they were hit with a sudden gut punch — the inauguration was moved indoors. Their ticket was now little more than a souvenir. 

A true mark of an artist is how well they age. 

Not simply by the passing years on the calendar, for that’s a privilege in itself to experience.

I don’t deserve to be called a scientist, but maybe I’m at least a fringe scientist after spending 50 years doing engineering and then medicine.
