Learn about ham radio in Haywood

Ham radio is both a fascinating hobby and a great tool during a disaster, as folks recently found out during Hurricane Helene. Those interested in learning more about ham radio can now do so through a five-week course being offered in Haywood County.

The class will meet from 6-7:3- p.m. Tuesday evenings from March 17 through April 16 at Longs Chapel Methodist Church in Haywood County. The first four weeks will be class instructionl; the fifth week the license exam will be offered. This class, along with some independent study, will give people enough knowledge to pass the exam for the technician level amateur radio exam.

There is no charge for this class. The test fee is $10 and the FCC charges a $35 fee for the license.

The “ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 5th Edition” is the suggested book for this class but is not mandatory. If buying a used copy please make sure it is the 5th edition good for tests until 2026. That book can be found at amzn.to/41ht7U0. A free study guide is available for download at bit.ly/4ioHqgq.

Please register at longschapel.churchcenter.com/unproxy/registrations/events/2805503.
