Emergency shelter operations conclude in Haywood
Haywood County’s emergency shelter operations for Tropical Storm Fred survivors have concluded this week, four months after sheltering first began on the night of Aug. 17.
On Tuesday, the last resident checked out of the hotel room they had been living in since the floods, on their way to the next step in their lives.
All families and individuals being housed in non-congregate sheltering as a result of Tropical Storm Fred have now officially moved onto the next step on their own or have entered a bridge program to help them get to the next step.
While shelter operations have come to an end, survivors needing assistance from this point on will continue to be assisted with referrals to partner agencies. Please call the Tropical Storm Fred hotline at 828-356-2022 for storm-related assistance requests.

Statement from the Shelter Managers regarding Tropical Storm Fred non-congregate shelter:
“It has been challenging and rewarding. We have learned so much. This was a team effort and would not have been possible without the HHSA staff who dedicated countless hours and all the community partners - especially Lake Junaluska Assembly. We also could not have accomplished what we have without the guidance and support from the state and the various local departments. We are so proud to be part of an organization and a community that stepped up in this moment.”
